Training Classes

Our fall and spring classes encourage artistic and personal growth through the study of a wide variety of performing arts topics. Classes are available after-school and on weekends to students ages 4 to 18.

Training Classes are offered as 12-week semesters in the fall (September to December) and spring (February to May). Classes cover a range of topics, from acting and improv to musical theatre, technical theatre, dance, and more.

Most classes are open to all levels of experience, while others are specifically designed for those with intermediate performing arts experience. Our expert teaching teams work with each student to help them reach their personal and artistic goals.

Creative Drama:

GRADES: PRE-K (AGES 4+) & KINDERGARTEN

Creative Drama is a perfect introduction to the world of theatre. This class emphasizes young children’s inherent sense of play, musicality, and imagination. Each day in Creative Drama offers lessons in storytelling, creative movement, group music, and theatre games.

Musical Theatre Explorations:

GRADES: 1st GRADE – 4th Grade

Song and dance are front and center in Musical Theatre Explorations! Children who love to belt tunes in the car or follow along with the latest online dance trends will love this class. Young people will get new perspectives on songs from their favorite musicals and movies when they are paired with teaching artists’ original choreography.

Acting & Improv Explorations

GRADES: 1st GRADE – 4th Grade

Acting & Improv Explorations is a collaborative, creative class is the perfect fit for young people with big ideas! This class builds theatrical skills like characterization, improvisation, and storytelling, as well as transferable skills like decision-making, teamwork, and mutual respect.

SPARC - Dance Explorations Cover

Dance Explorations:

GRADES: 1st Grade – 4th Grade

Youth who have a strong interest in Broadway dance will love this new class! In Dance Explorations, each young person will develop an understanding of the healthy habits that build and sustain a dancer’s practice.

Intermediate Musical Theatre Explorations:

GRADES: 3rd Grade – 4th Grade

This Intermediate Musical Theatre class is designed to support students who have excelled in their studies in Musical Theatre and would benefit from a more rigorous curriculum.

Intermediate Acting & Improv Explorations

GRADES: 3rd Grade – 4th Grade

This Intermediate Acting & Improv class is designed to support students who have excelled in their studies in Acting & Improv and would benefit from a more rigorous curriculum.

Intro to Costume Construction

Design & Drama:

GRADES: 3rd Grade – 5th Grade

Visual art and performing arts combine in Design & Drama! Young people who love to make crafts, draw, or paint will find a new creative outlet in this class. We’ll use hands-on arts experiences to learn about behind-the-scenes roles like props, costume, and set design.

SPARC - Dance Explorations Cover

Dance Studio:

GRADES: 5th Grade – 8th Grade

Youth who have a strong interest in Broadway dance will love this new class! In Dance Studio, each young person will develop an understanding of the healthy habits that build and sustain a dancer’s practice. The class will learn stretching and warm-up techniques and understand basic choreographic terms and concepts as they rehearse.

Stand-Up Comedy 101:

GRADES: 5th Grade – 8th Grade

This introduction to stand-up comedy is designed to get the creative juices flowing! Over the course of this twelve-week class, youth will explore ways to unlock ideas, practice writing those ideas with a joke structure, and try out a few lines of material to share with friends at family at the end of the semester.

SPARC - Musical Theatre Studio Cover

Musical Theatre Studio:

GRADES: 5th Grade – 8th Grade

Jump into the upbeat world of musical theatre in this high-energy class! Students who enjoy singing and dancing will love this opportunity to learn music and choreography from their favorite shows. Young performers will learn several styles of movement and song in this class, while learning more about theatre through games and warm-ups.

Acting & Improv Studio:

GRADES: 5th Grade – 8th Grade

Young people who enjoy creating characters, telling stories, and immersing themselves in a role will delight in this class with an emphasis on play! Students will expand their understanding of important acting and improvisational skills like working with scene partners, making strong choices, expressing emotion, and saying “yes”. This dynamic class also teaches focus, empathy, and commitment.

The focus of SPARC’s intermediate classes will be to provide students with more advanced performance materials and guide them through an in-depth process in developing the performer’s tool kit.

The focus of SPARC’s intermediate classes will be to provide students with more advanced performance materials and guide them through an in-depth process in developing the performer’s tool kit.

SPARC - Lighting Class

The Designer's Process:

GRADES: 6th Grade – 12th Grade

Designer’s Process will give budding designers an opportunity to work on their skills as a scenic designer, costume designer, and atmospheric designer (lighting/sound/etc). The course is divided into three units over the course of twelve weeks with a rotation of Teaching Artists. Though each discipline will rotate every four weeks, designers will be working on making creative choices around one consistent script.

SPARC - Stage Combat Cover

Stage Combat:

GRADES: 8th Grade – 12th Grade

This class will cover the basics of choreographed fight sequences for the stage. Youth will learn how to keep themselves and others safe while creating the illusion of drama for an audience. When in any type of physical class that requires partner work, it is essential that students follow ALL safety protocol set in place by the instructor(s).

SPARC - Puppeteer Cover

The Puppeteer's Process:

GRADES: 8th Grade – 12th Grade

In this brand new technical theatre class, students will gain hands-on skills in both the construction of puppets and their implementation on the stage. Did you know almost anything can be a puppet? The Puppeteer’s Process will dive into how to create characters from shapes, buzz words, and texture, while working as a group to literally bring a story to life.

SPARC - Stage Combat Cover

The Performer's Process:

GRADES: 8th Grade – 12th Grade

The Performer’s Process will give young artists an opportunity to work on their skills as a singer, actor and dancer. The course is divided into three units over the course of twelve weeks with a rotation of Teaching Artists. For four weeks each of the performance disciplines will be given full focus, ultimately empowering the youth to make creative character-driven choices, convey emotion through song and dance, and become confident storytellers.
