Technical Theatre

Learn about the behind the scenes crafts & practices that are involved in theatre!
SPARC is proud to offer training in technical theatre and design for youth who want to learn more about the art and practices of behind-the-scenes and backstage work. Technical theatre opportunities are open to students in 1st to 12th grades. Technical Theatre programs are anywhere from 4-24 weeks.

Tech Theatre programs at SPARC are open to all experience levels and all abilities!

Design & Drama Classes

Visual art and performing arts combine in Design & Drama! Young people who love to make crafts, draw, or paint will find a new creative outlet in this class. We'll use hands-on arts experiences to learn about behind-the-scenes roles like props, costume, and set design. Students will use their new creations during class through acting, improvisation, and character development exercises. Design & Drama is a wonderful starting point for young people who want to later explore SPARC's technical theatre and design classes, like StageCraft or Backstage Camp! Design & Drama classes run in the fall and spring for 12 weeks.

StageCraft Programs

Our StageCraft programs focus on stagecraft in its broadest definition: all technical aspects of a theatrical production. Students in SPARC's StageCraft programming learn a variety of roles in techincal theatre and get hands-on experience with our mainstage production season.

StageCraft Foundations

GRADES: 4th grade – 7th grade

Students in StageCraft Foundations learn the basics of technical theatre with hands-on instruction in visual arts, construction, basic tools, world-building, the art of repurposing and recycling materials, and collaborative problem solving.

Our StageCraft Foundations program is offered at SPARC as well as after-school programs through various public and private school groups.

StageCraft Foundations is offered in the fall and the spring for 12-weeks.

SPARC - Lighting Class

StageCraft

GrADES: 8th Grade – 12th Grade

StageCraft focuses on building a community for students interested in all aspects of technical theatre, but especially backstage work. As a cohort, the group applies their weekly lessons to Crew Roles on SPARC’s Mainstage Production Season including but not limited to: electrics, set construction, scenic arts, mic mixing, and costume assistance.

StageCraft students meet with professional Designers and Technicians, take field trips to professional theatres and production events (as scheduling allows), and attend production work calls throughout the year. Information about time outside of the weekly class time will always be shared well in advance and with student availability in mind so families can better prepare their schedules.

Senior members of StageCraft may be tasked with individual projects such as assisting a Designer on a SPARC show, Assistant Stage Managing, or leading their own crew of students throughout a production process.

StageCraft is a yearlong program.

Tech Workshops

For a more in-depth look at the many facets of technical theatre, SPARC offers 4-6-week workshops centered on specialties. These offerings vary year to year. Past workshops have included: Lighting Design, Carpentry, Scenic Painting, and Stitching.
